About
Yakima Sportsman State Park is a 266-acre camping park originally created by the Yakima Sportsman's Association in 1940 to promote game management and preserve natural resources. Located on the floodplain of the Yakima River near urban Yakima, the park serves as an irrigated green oasis in the surrounding desert landscape. The campground features 67 sites including 37 full hookup sites that can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, as well as standard sites and a tent-only group camp for up to 100 people. Modern amenities include accessible restrooms with showers, a dump station, and an automated pay station. The park's varied deciduous trees provide ample shade throughout the camping and picnic areas. Recreational opportunities include exploring the Juan A. Alvarez Living Classroom with its paved ADA-accessible trail and pier entering a wetland area, excellent wildlife viewing of more than 130 bird species including wood ducks, red-winged blackbirds, herons and hawks, and fishing in the annually stocked juvenile pond and Yakima River. Additional facilities include covered picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, volleyball court, playground, and two miles of hiking trails. The park's transformation from desert to green space, spring wildflowers, and vibrant fall foliage make it a popular stopover for travelers and visitors to Yakima area events.
Directions
