The cabin is currently closed for the season. It opens Memorial Day weekend (late May) and operates through Labor Day (early September). Reservations are available through Recreation.gov.

The have issued an Air Quality Alert until 11 AM PDT Thursday. An Air Quality Alert has been issued for Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Kittitas, Klickitat, Walla Walla and Yakima Counties until further notice due to expected wildfire smoke from regional fires. Expect some clearing out and intermittent good air quality but with significant fires on the landscape conditions can worsen quickly to unhealthy air. Be sure to check air monitors in your area before outdoor activities. People can take the following precautions to protect their health: * Follow local burn restrictions to prevent deteriorating air quality. * Avoid strenuous outdoor activity in smoky conditions. * People with heart or lung problems and young children are especially vulnerable. These people should stay indoors while smoke levels are high. * Use certified High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters in indoor heating ventilation, cooling, and air purification systems. * Avoid using wood-burning stoves and other sources of indoor smoke if possible. The Washington State Department of Ecology, Benton Clean Air Agency, and the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency have issued an Air Quality Alert until further notice. For the Smoke Air Quality Alert, wildfires burning in the region combined with forecasted conditions will cause air quality to reach unhealthy levels. Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes, runny nose, aggravate heart and lung diseases, and aggravate other serious health problems. Limit outdoor activities and keep children indoors if it is smoky. Please follow medical advice if you have a heart or lung condition. About
Taneum Cabin is a small but comfortable Forest Service cabin located in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, approximately 20 miles west of Ellensburg, Washington. Situated at 2,400 feet elevation along Taneum Creek, the cabin is surrounded by Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir, with abundant wildlife including deer, squirrels, and migratory birds. The four-room cabin includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen. Modern conveniences include running water via handpump and spigot, propane-powered range, refrigerator, and water heater, plus battery-operated lanterns for lighting. The indoor bathroom features a flush toilet and bathtub with shower. A wood stove provides supplemental heat. The kitchen comes equipped with dishes, silverware, and cooking pans. Guests must bring sleeping bags, towels, toilet paper, dish soap, matches, and garbage bags. Outdoor amenities include a picnic table and campfire ring. Firewood is available for purchase at $10 per bundle. The cabin has a gravel pull-through driveway accommodating vehicles up to 40 feet and up to 4 vehicles total. Taneum Creek offers fair-sized trout fishing in June and July, and numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and OHV use are within 5 miles.
Directions
From Seattle: Take I-90 to Exit 93. Turn left on Elk Heights Road and travel 1/4 mile north to Thorp Prairie Road. Turn right and go about 3.5 miles to East Taneum Road. Turn right, cross over I-90, and turn right on West Taneum Road, which becomes Forest Service Road 33. Drive 6 miles to Taneum Cabin on the left. From Ellensburg: Take I-90 to Exit 101 (Thorp). Turn left on Thorp Highway, travel 3/4 mile, then turn right on Thorp Cemetery Road, which becomes West Taneum Road/Forest Service Road 33 after about 4 miles. Taneum Cabin is on the left in another 5 miles.
