Woolum Campground offers a primitive camping experience in a large open field at the Woolum access point to the Buffalo River near St. Joe, Arkansas. Operated by the National Park Service as part of Buffalo National River, this free campground serves primarily as overflow camping when Tyler Bend Campground reaches capacity. Unlike developed campgrounds, Woolum has no designated campsites, water, showers, or hookups of any kind.
The camping area consists of an open field where campers can set up tents or park RVs wherever space is available. A vault toilet is provided year-round, and campers may use dead and down wood for campfires. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Visitors should note that camping is only permitted in the field to the left and along the right side of the road; the hay fields along the left side of the road are off-limits.
Woolum provides access to the Buffalo River for floating, fishing, and water activities. The campground is located approximately 7 miles west of St. Joe via County Road 374. While South Woolum Road has been closed for safety reasons, the campground and launch remain accessible via an alternate route. With a maximum stay of 14 consecutive days and quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Woolum offers an affordable, rustic camping option for those seeking a no-frills outdoor experience along the Buffalo National River.

From St. Joe, Arkansas, take County Road 374 west 7 miles to Woolum river access. Camping is permitted in the field to the left and along the right side of the road. No camping permitted in the hay fields along the left side of the road. Note: South Woolum Road is closed; use alternate route.
