About
Maumee South Campground is a large primitive camping area located in the lower district of Buffalo National River, accessible via Highway 52. This free campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is open year-round for visitors seeking a rustic camping experience. The campground has no designated sites, allowing campers to choose their own spots within the area.
Amenities are minimal at Maumee South. A vault toilet is available with limited or no servicing, particularly during the off-season. There is no potable water available on-site, no trash service, and no hookups of any kind. Campers must be completely self-sufficient, bringing all necessary water and supplies and packing out all trash. Fires are permitted in designated fire rings, and cook stoves are allowed.
The campground is located in the scenic Ozarks along the Buffalo River, offering opportunities for river access, fishing, hiking, and enjoying the natural surroundings. Summer in the area can be very hot and humid, while other seasons may bring wet and cool or dry and warm conditions. River levels can change dramatically with rainfall, so visitors should monitor weather forecasts and river conditions when planning their trip.
