About
Wolf Ford Horse Camp is a reservation-only equestrian campground nestled in the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, approximately 3.2 miles down Yellow Gap Road (gravel Forest Service Road 1206) near Brevard, North Carolina. The campground is specifically designed for horse camping and offers 11-12 non-electric sites, each equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, hitching racks, and lantern posts. A vault toilet is available on-site, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring adequate supplies.
The campground serves as an excellent launching point for exploring over 100 miles of equestrian trails in the South Mills River area, along with numerous Forest Service roads suitable for riding. The surrounding landscape features the confluence of several creeks and the South Fork of the Mills River, with abundant wildlife including various bird species and black bears. Large shade trees including maples, oaks, poplars, birches, and pines provide cover throughout the camp.
Nearby attractions include the Cradle of Forestry (America's first forestry school), the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah Inn, the NC Wildlife Education Center and Fish Hatchery, DuPont State Forest, and the town of Brevard. This is bear country, so all food, cookware, and trash must be secured in vehicles when unattended. Campers are required to clean up after their horses, including manure and hay. A dumpster is available 4 miles away at Pink Beds Picnic Area.
