12:35 PM — 10:00 PM

...Please check with state and local authorities regarding guidelines for allowed activities... * The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the 40s and 50s across Lake Champlain and in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Wintturi Shelter is a three-sided Adirondack-style log lean-to located along the Appalachian Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest near Bridgewater, Vermont. At approximately 1,910 feet elevation, it provides overnight accommodation for 6-8 hikers in a forested backcountry setting. The shelter was rebuilt in 1995 and is named after Mauri Wintturi, a dedicated trail volunteer who maintained this section. This primitive backcountry shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations. Water is available from nearby natural sources but must be filtered or treated before drinking. A privy is located near the shelter. Hikers should follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash. The shelter is maintained by the Ottauquechee Section of the Green Mountain Club, which manages this portion of the Appalachian Trail. Camping at trailside shelters is limited to two consecutive nights. This is a hike-in only facility with no vehicle access.
