Wintturin Shelter

Open — Open year-round, first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Limited to two consecutive nights per site.

About

Wintturin Shelter is a primitive three-sided lean-to shelter located along Vermont's historic Long Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest. As part of the extensive Long Trail shelter system maintained by the Green Mountain Club, this backcountry site provides basic overnight accommodations for hikers traversing the oldest long-distance hiking trail in America. The shelter typically sleeps 6-10 people and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations available. The site includes a primitive privy and access to a nearby water source, though water purity and reliability cannot be guaranteed and all water must be treated or filtered before consumption. Campers must carry their own food, backpacking stove, and overnight gear. Small wood fires are permitted in permanent fireplaces at the site following Leave No Trace principles. Primitive tent camping is also allowed between shelters in this section of the Green Mountain National Forest. The shelter is accessible year-round, though winter conditions in the Green Mountains can be challenging with snow and cold temperatures. The Green Mountain Club requests that visitors stay no more than two consecutive nights at any Long Trail shelter to ensure availability for other hikers.
