About

Stony Brook Shelter is a primitive backcountry shelter located along the Appalachian Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest near Killington, Vermont. Sitting at approximately 1,760 feet elevation, this three-sided shelter was constructed by dedicated volunteers and serves as an overnight stopping point for Appalachian Trail hikers. The shelter is positioned between Governor Clement Shelter to the north (approximately 6.7 miles) and Winturri Shelter to the south (approximately 9.9 miles). As a typical AT shelter, Stony Brook features a raised wooden floor, a roof, and open front, providing basic protection from the elements. Water must be treated or filtered from nearby Stony Brook or other water sources. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations and no fees required. Maintained by the Green Mountain Club in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, this shelter is available year-round for backcountry hikers, though winter access requires appropriate gear and preparedness for Vermont's challenging mountain conditions.
