Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:33AM EDT by NWS Burlington VT
* The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures. Lake and river temperatures are only in the upper 40s to mid 50s. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating today and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!
About
Stony Brook Shelter is a traditional three-sided backcountry shelter situated along the Appalachian Trail in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest near Killington. At an elevation of approximately 1,760 feet, the shelter was constructed by volunteers from the Green Mountain Club's Upper Valley Ottaquechee Section as part of a major trail relocation project between 1980 and 1990. The shelter can accommodate up to 8 hikers and is available on a first-come, first-served basis with a two-consecutive-night limit. Water is not available directly at the shelter but can be obtained from Stony Brook or Mink Brook a short distance away; all water must be treated or filtered before drinking. The shelter has an associated privy and large tenting areas for overflow camping. This shelter is part of a network of approximately 26 Appalachian Trail shelters managed on Green Mountain National Forest land. The next shelter to the north is approximately 9.9 miles away, and the next shelter to the south is about 6.7 miles away. The Forest Service partners with the Green Mountain Club to maintain these high-use shelters.
