Churchill Scott Shelter

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations or fees required.

About

Churchill Scott Shelter is a backcountry shelter situated along the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail corridor near Pico Peak in the Green Mountain National Forest. Built in 2002, the shelter is dedicated to W. Churchill Scott, who was a member of the Killington Section of the Green Mountain Club for nearly seventy years, and memorializes Alice Ference, a through-hiker who drowned while crossing the Kennebec River in Maine in the 1980s. The shelter is located approximately 0.1 mile west of the Appalachian Trail and can accommodate 8 people, with an additional wooden tent platform available for overflow camping. A small spring provides a water source near the shelter, though hikers should be prepared to treat or filter water. During peak hiking season, a Green Mountain Club caretaker may be present at the shelter. As with all Long Trail shelters, Churchill Scott Shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The shelter is accessible year-round, though winter visitors should be aware that the Long Trail is not specifically maintained for winter use. Hikers are encouraged to carry their own shelter as the site can fill up during peak season.

Directions

Churchill Scott Shelter is accessible via the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail. From the US Route 4 trailhead near Killington, hike southbound approximately 1.9 miles to reach the shelter. The trail is well-marked and traverses moderate terrain.
