Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:33AM EDT by NWS Burlington VT

2:33 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures. Lake and river temperatures are only in the upper 40s to mid 50s. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating today and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Thistle Hill Shelter is a classic three-sided Appalachian Trail shelter located in the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont's Windsor County. The shelter sits along the AT between West Hartford and the New Hampshire border, providing a convenient overnight stop for thru-hikers and section hikers alike. The shelter features wooden bunks that can accommodate 6-10 people, a fire ring, and bench seating. A privy is located nearby, and water is available from a nearby source but must be filtered or treated before drinking. Like all AT shelters in this region, Thistle Hill operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees charged. Use of the shelter is limited to two consecutive nights. The shelter is maintained cooperatively by the Green Mountain Club and the USDA Forest Service. Hikers should come prepared for backcountry conditions and practice Leave No Trace principles.
