Rolston Rest Shelter
Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No fee or reservation required. Maximum stay is two consecutive nights.
About
Rolston Rest Shelter sits at approximately 2,160 feet elevation on the Long Trail within the Green Mountain National Forest. The property spans 2,744 acres of dense forest, headwater streams, and scenic peaks, containing 3 miles of the Long Trail as well as sections of the Catamount Trail and Velomont Trail. Brandon Gap marks the transition between easier southern terrain and more challenging northern sections of the Long Trail. The shelter is a traditional three-sided Adirondack-style structure that can accommodate 6-10 hikers. A privy is located nearby, and water sources are available but require treatment or filtering before consumption. The site is managed by the US Forest Service in partnership with the Green Mountain Club, which provides caretakers at high-use shelters along the trail system. Use of the shelter is limited to two consecutive nights. During peak hiking season, shelters frequently fill, so carrying a tent or tarp is strongly recommended. The shelter is accessible only by hiking from Brandon Gap trailhead parking.
Directions
From Brandon, take Route 73 east for 7.5 miles. Trailhead parking is on the right just before the top of Brandon Gap. The trail starts on the opposite side of Route 73. Note: trailhead parking lot experiences vandalism, so secure valuables.
