About
Windy Camp is a remote campground situated in the Payette National Forest in west-central Idaho. As a U.S. Forest Service facility, it offers primitive camping in a mountainous setting typical of the 2.3 million acre Payette National Forest. The campground provides basic amenities found at backcountry Forest Service sites, without the developed facilities common at more accessible national or state park campgrounds. The Payette National Forest encompasses diverse terrain ranging from deep canyon recesses to peaks approaching 9,500 feet in elevation. Windy Camp serves visitors seeking a more remote camping experience away from heavily developed areas. Access and conditions can vary significantly by season, with winter snowpack typically limiting access from late fall through spring.
Directions
From Riggins, Idaho, travel south on Highway 95 for 1.3 miles to Seven Devils Road (Forest Road 517). Turn right onto Seven Devils Road and proceed 17 miles to the trailhead and horse camp road junction. Take a left at the road junction, then turn right into the trailhead entrance. Note: Forest Road 517 is steep and narrow; low-clearance vehicles, RVs, and trailers are not recommended.
