About
Adams Ranger Station is a historic Forest Service cabin built in 1932 at 5,150 feet elevation in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. Adams Camp served as a way station along the Milner Trail as early as 1862, and the Forest Service established the adjacent area as an administrative site in 1919. The cabin served as District headquarters until 1958 and hosted various summer crews before being renovated and opened for public rental in 2008. The cabin is located near the Gospel-Hump Wilderness, where elevations range from 1,970 feet at the Wind River pack bridge to 8,940 feet at Buffalo Hump summit. The northern wilderness is wetter and heavily forested, while the southern part is dry and sparsely vegetated, separated by a rugged glaciated divide. Wildlife includes mountain lions, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and wolves. Summer access is via forest roads from Grangeville or Highway 14. Winter access requires snowmobiling approximately 30 miles from Fish Creek Snow Park along a groomed route. Nearby Corral Creek trailhead provides access to the Gospel-Hump Wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. The Milner Trail is open to off-road vehicles in summer and snowmobiles in winter.
