Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK

February 8th, 1:57 PM — 4:00 PM

After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.

About

Windfall Lake Cabin, built in 1998, is one of the most popular cabins on the Tongass National Forest. This rustic retreat sits on the eastern end of Windfall Lake, offering panoramic views of crystal-clear water, dense evergreen forest, and surrounding mountains from its front deck. The 14x16-ft pan-abode style cabin sleeps six people with two single and two double bunks, and includes a table, benches, propane furnace, wood stove, axe, and splitting maul. Propane is provided for the furnace. The cabin is fully accessible, with an elevated boardwalk connecting the dock, cabin, and outhouse. A picnic table sits on the front deck and a campfire ring is available outside. The site serves both as an overnight accommodation and a warming hut for winter recreationists. The partially planked trail has minimal elevation gain, appealing to hikers, snowshoers, and skiers of all levels. In winter, cross-country skiing is available on an undeveloped trail route to Spaulding Meadows. Visitors can explore Windfall Lake by canoe, and fish for salmon and trout in Windfall Creek and Windfall Lake with a state fishing license. Bears are frequent visitors, and beavers and waterfowl are commonly seen on the lake.

Directions

Access is by hiking trail or floatplane. Take Glacier Highway north of Juneau to mile 26.6. The parking area is on the right just past Herbert River Road before the Herbert River Bridge. A 1-mile hike on Herbert River Road leads to the trailhead on the bank of Herbert River. The road is closed to vehicle traffic. Access to the cabin is via the 3.3-mile Windfall Lake Trail to the cabin on the east shore of Windfall Lake. An alternate 7-mile trail starts at the end of Montana Creek Road.
