...SNOW CONTINUES FOR THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE INTO MID WEEK... .Snowfall and periods of freezing rain continue for much of the northern half of the panhandle from Juneau and Icy Strait corridor area northward. The rain/snow line has moved southward today sitting just south of Tenakee Springs and Elfin Cove Monday evening. Snow totals have so far been around 15 to 47 inches across the northern panhandle. A low in the gulf is continuing to send surges of moisture into the panhandle with another surge expected to arrive for the northern inner channels late Monday night, bringing more renewed snowfall rates with it. Following this will be a slight decrease in snow rates Tuesday before a second wave of moisture is expected for late Tuesday night. Into Wednesday precip rates should then start to diminish. The rain/snow line will be wavering south of the Icy Strait area through this entire time period. Please stay tuned to future updates on this impactful storm. * WHAT...Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 17 to 22 inches. * WHERE...Glacier Bay and City and Borough of Juneau. * WHEN...Until noon AKST Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Additional accumulating snowfall totals will be highly variable. The bulk of the additional snow accumulation will be where heavier showers move through, and out the road in Juneau. Snowfall rates will pick up again late Monday night, diminish on Tuesday, then pick back up again Tuesday night as a series of waves moves through, though these will be weaker than previous waves.

About

Windfall Lake Cabin, built in 1998, is one of the most popular cabins on the Tongass National Forest. This rustic retreat sits on the eastern end of Windfall Lake, offering panoramic views of crystal-clear water, dense evergreen forest, and surrounding mountains from its front deck. The 14x16-ft pan-abode style cabin sleeps six people with two single and two double bunks, and includes a table, benches, propane furnace, wood stove, axe, and splitting maul. Propane is provided for the furnace. The cabin is fully accessible, with an elevated boardwalk connecting the dock, cabin, and outhouse. A picnic table sits on the front deck and a campfire ring is available outside. The site serves both as an overnight accommodation and a warming hut for winter recreationists. The partially planked trail has minimal elevation gain, appealing to hikers, snowshoers, and skiers of all levels. In winter, cross-country skiing is available on an undeveloped trail route to Spaulding Meadows. Visitors can explore Windfall Lake by canoe, and fish for salmon and trout in Windfall Creek and Windfall Lake with a state fishing license. Bears are frequent visitors, and beavers and waterfowl are commonly seen on the lake.

Directions

Access is by hiking trail or floatplane. Take Glacier Highway north of Juneau to mile 26.6. The parking area is on the right just past Herbert River Road before the Herbert River Bridge. A 1-mile hike on Herbert River Road leads to the trailhead on the bank of Herbert River. The road is closed to vehicle traffic. Access to the cabin is via the 3.3-mile Windfall Lake Trail to the cabin on the east shore of Windfall Lake. An alternate 7-mile trail starts at the end of Montana Creek Road.
