About
John Muir Cabin is a 15x12-foot chalet-style log cabin operated by the Tongass National Forest. The cabin sits in a subalpine meadow surrounded by mountain hemlock and pine forest, with very wet meadows and wildflowers in season. Two double bunks on the first floor and two bunks on the second floor accommodate up to 8 guests. The cabin includes a propane furnace (propane provided), wood stove, table with benches, broom, dustpan, and snow shovel. There is no potable water, electricity, firewood, or cooking facilities. Guests must bring their own water or treat water from the nearby stream. A vault toilet is accessible via a ramp and hardened trail. All garbage must be packed out. Open fires are permitted in the fire ring using dead and down wood only. The area is home to black bears, brown bears, deer, and porcupines. In winter, the open meadows provide excellent cross-country skiing, and a marked trail connects to Peterson Lake Cabin. A GPS or map and compass are recommended for winter travel.
Directions
The trailhead is at mile marker 12.3 on Glacier Highway, 13 miles northwest of Juneau near Auke Bay. Hike 3.5 miles on the partially planked Auk Nu Trail through muskeg with 1,500 feet of elevation gain. The cabin is also accessible by helicopter. In winter, skis or snowshoes are recommended.
