About
Channel Islands State Marine Park consists of 14 islands scattered across 3,560 acres in Lynn Canal, approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Juneau. The park is accessible only by small boat from Amalga Harbor, Auke Bay, or North Douglas boat launches, or by float plane. Lincoln Island and Shelter Island are the most popular destinations, with sandy and gravelly beaches suitable for dispersed camping, as well as forested camping areas. The park is a premier destination for wildlife viewing, particularly in North Pass where humpback whales are frequently spotted. Anglers target salmon and halibut in the surrounding waters. The area sees high recreational use for kayaking, boating, photography, and waterfowl and big game hunting. Several public use cabins are also available on the islands. The climate is wet with 60-90 inches of annual rainfall and high humidity. Summer temperatures average in the 60s, rarely reaching 80 degrees. Weather can change rapidly and storms may last for days, so quality rain gear and warm clothing are essential. Snow can begin accumulating as early as October.
Directions
Accessible only by boat or float plane. Launch from Amalga Harbor boat launch, Auke Bay, or North Douglas boat launch in Juneau. The park is located 12-30 miles northwest of Juneau along Favorite Channel and Auke Bay.
