...SNOW CONTINUES FOR THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE INTO MID WEEK... .Snowfall and periods of freezing rain continue for much of the northern half of the panhandle from Juneau and Icy Strait corridor area northward. The rain/snow line has moved southward today sitting just south of Tenakee Springs and Elfin Cove Monday evening. Snow totals have so far been around 15 to 47 inches across the northern panhandle. Following this will be a slight decrease in snow rates Tuesday before a second wave of moisture is expected for late Tuesday night. Into Wednesday precip rates should then start to diminish. The rain/snow line will be wavering south of the Icy Strait area through this entire time period. Please stay tuned to future updates on this impactful storm. * WHAT...Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 17 to 22 inches. * WHERE...Glacier Bay and City and Borough of Juneau. * WHEN...Until noon AKST Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Additional accumulating snowfall totals will be highly variable. The bulk of the additional snow accumulation will be where heavier showers move through, and out the road in Juneau. Snowfall rates will pick up again late Monday night, diminish on Tuesday, then pick back up again Tuesday night as a series of waves moves through, though these will be weaker than previous waves.
About
Eagle Glacier Cabin is a 12x16-foot log chalet nestled on the shore of Eagle Lake in Tongass National Forest, offering breathtaking views of Eagle Glacier and the surrounding mountains. This remote backcountry cabin is accessed via the 5.5-mile Amalga Trail, which begins at mile marker 27.3 on Glacier Highway. The trail follows the north side of Eagle River through old-growth spruce and hemlock forest with dense alder and willow patches, passing several beaver dams along the way. Hikers should allow 3.5 to 4 hours to reach the cabin with a full overnight pack. The trail is fairly strenuous with only 300 feet of elevation gain but can be muddy in warmer months and bumpy in winter, making snowshoes preferable to cross-country skis. The cabin accommodates up to 8 people with one single bunk, one double bunk, and a loft. It includes a wood stove (wood not provided), propane wall furnace (propane supplied), table and benches, cooking counter, food cupboard, and an outhouse. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated before use. From the cabin, hikers can continue another 2 miles toward Eagle Glacier or explore a half-mile trail to a large waterfall. The area is home to eagles, black and brown bears, beavers, and waterfowl, with berry picking available in summer. Visitors must pack in all gear including sleeping bags, cooking equipment, food, and fire starter.
