About
Willow Prairie Cabin is a historic one-room log cabin constructed in 1924 by a Forest Service road crew as a firefighter guard station. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cabin was converted to a horse camp in 1990 and restored by local volunteers and Butte Falls Ranger District employees. The cabin sits at 4,300 feet elevation in the southwest Cascade Range at the foot of Mt. McLoughlin. The rustic cabin sleeps up to four people and is furnished with two bunk beds (no mattresses), a wood stove for heat, table and chairs, and counter space for meal preparation. Two shutter-style windows have no glass. A vault toilet is located in the adjacent Willow Prairie Campground. Guests must bring their own camp stove, cookware, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, light source, garbage bags, and toilet paper. Firewood may be available but supply is not guaranteed. Four 12x12 foot horse paddocks with water troughs accommodate up to four horses. The cabin is surrounded by more than 19 miles of horse trails. Adjacent wetlands featuring a beaver swamp and large ponds provide habitat for sandhill cranes, great blue herons, Canada geese, elk, and deer.
