Wilderness Road State Park Shelters

Open — The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk. Picnic shelters can be rented for day use from 8 a.m. to dark and require advance reservation by calling the Customer Service Center.

About

Wilderness Road State Park offers three picnic shelters for day-use rental in Virginia's far southwest corner. These shelters are located in a historically significant area along the route Daniel Boone carved in 1775, which became the principal route westward for over 300,000 settlers by 1800. The shelters sit near the reconstructed Martin's Station, an outdoor living history museum depicting Virginia's 1775 frontier. Each shelter comes equipped with grills, picnic tables, water spigots, and electrical outlets. Shelters 1 and 2 each seat 48 people under cover, while Shelter 3 seats 60 and includes a built-in fireplace. Additional picnic tables surround the shelters but are not included in reservations. Nearby amenities include restrooms, playground equipment, a volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. The shelters are universally accessible and can be rented from 8 a.m. to dark. The park also features a visitor center with an award-winning docudrama theater, gift shop, nature center, 6.5 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and a trout-stocked section of Indian Creek. A 100-seat amphitheater and the historic 1870s Karlan Mansion are also available for rental.
