About
Leatherwood Recreation Area is a day-use recreation facility managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Buckhorn Lake in the Cumberland Plateau of southeastern Kentucky. The site centers around the Leatherwood Shelter, a group-use covered shelter available by reservation for day activities. Adjacent to the shelter is a fishing pier providing access to Buckhorn Lake's fishing opportunities, including bluegill, large and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, and muskie. The facility includes vault toilet facilities and is situated in a scenic forested setting typical of the deeply dissected plateau landscape of Perry County. The area serves as a convenient day-use destination for picnicking, fishing, and group gatherings. Nearby attractions include Buckhorn Campground, playground facilities, basketball courts, and boat ramps for those seeking additional recreational opportunities on Buckhorn Lake. This is strictly a day-use area with no overnight camping permitted. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov and are required for shelter use. Cancellations must be made at least one day in advance.
