Trace Branch Campground
Closed — Closed for the season. Operates early May through late September. Reservations available through Recreation.gov.
Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 11:11AM EDT by NWS Jackson KY
Low humidity, sunny to mostly sunny skies, unseasonably warm temperatures, very dry fuels, and breezy conditions will combine to result in Elevated Fire Danger this afternoon into early evening. Humidities will slowly recover but winds are forecast to persist through the overnight. Burning is not recommended as wildfire behavior could become erratic. Remember that Kentucky regulations make it illegal to burn between the hours of 6 AM and 6 PM within 150 feet of a woodland or brushland during the Spring Forest Fire Season that runs until April 30th.
About
Trace Branch Campground is located on Buckhorn Lake in the Cumberland Plateau of eastern Kentucky, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The campground features 28 campsites, most with waterfront views and all equipped with electric and water hookups. The facility includes a shower house, playground, horseshoe pits, and convenient fishing access. One group shelter with electric is also available. Buckhorn Lake is situated in a rugged plateau landscape deeply traversed by narrow, winding valleys separated by steep watersheds. The Middle Fork of the Kentucky River feeds the lake, creating ideal conditions for anglers seeking seclusion from fishing pressure and boat traffic. The lake produces some of the best muskie fishing in the region. During summer months, comfortable water temperatures make swimming and water skiing popular activities. Hikers can take advantage of the area's trails through the lush Appalachian Mountain landscape. Nearby attractions include the Lilley Cornett Woods, Daniel Boone National Forest, Natural Bridge State Resort Park, and the Red River Gorge Geological Area. The campground features plenty of shade and open grassy areas for spreading out and enjoying the natural scenery. Campers should note that the campground is prone to flooding when lake levels are high.
