Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 11:08AM EDT by NWS Gaylord MI

11:08 AM — 8:00 PM

The combination of dry surface conditions, low afternoon relative humidity values, and gusty east to southeast winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan this. Sustained winds of 7 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be seen over northern Michigan this afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 35 percent are expected over much of northern lower Michigan. These conditions could lead to rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning. For more information on burning restrictions for Michigan, see www.dnr.state.mi.us//.

About

Wilderness State Park Campground sits on one of the largest undeveloped stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The campground is divided into three modern areas: East Lakeshore (sites 301-365, remodeled in 2022), West Lakeshore (sites 401-471, remodeled in 2019), and Pines (sites 501-599). Both Lakeshore loops offer waterfront or water-view sites with paved pads and substantial fire rings. The Pines loop sits across the county road and offers more shade and privacy. All modern sites have electric hookups ranging from 20 to 50 amps, with 18 sites featuring full water and electric hookups. Beyond the modern campgrounds, 25 walk-in tent-only sites (101-125) provide a more secluded experience with short walks of 15 to 150 yards from parking. Six historic rustic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps are available year-round with wood-burning stoves but no electricity or running water. Three bunkhouses also accommodate larger groups. The park offers over 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, plus access to Waugoshance Point and views of the Straits of Mackinac. A portion of the park is designated as an International Dark Sky Preserve, making it excellent for stargazing. Pets are permitted but restricted from most beaches April through August to protect endangered piping plover habitat; two designated pet-friendly beach areas remain accessible year-round.
