Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area

Open — Open year-round for camping. Reservations available through ReserveAmerica, with some sites first-come, first-served. Nebraska park entry permit required.

About

Located in the scenic Wildcat Hills of western Nebraska, this state recreation area encompasses 1,094 acres of dramatic rock buttes, pine-clad canyons, and rugged wilderness. The campground provides 12 primitive campsites scattered along the interior trail roads, offering an authentic backcountry experience close to Gering and the North Platte River Valley. The recreation area is geared primarily for day-use activities but welcomes overnight campers seeking a primitive experience. The summit access road and interior roads are not suitable for large recreational vehicles or vehicles towing larger camping trailers due to narrow passages and limited turnaround areas. Sites are non-pad and offer minimal amenities, making this an ideal destination for tent campers and smaller RVs seeking solitude. Beyond camping, visitors can explore the Nature Center, hiking trails through pine forests and rock formations, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape including Scotts Bluff National Monument to the northwest. The area provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and experiencing Nebraska's unique Pine Ridge ecosystem.
