About

Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area sits on the western edge of the Nebraska Sandhills, 9 miles north of Hemingford. The 1,600-acre reservoir was built for irrigation and now serves as a popular destination for fishing, camping, and water sports. The surrounding 2,212-acre recreation area features rolling sandhills terrain and excellent birdwatching opportunities. The campground expanded in 2024 to include 60 Electric Plus camping pads with 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups, plus 26 Basic non-pad sites without electricity. Each campsite includes a fire ring and picnic table. Modern amenities include a shower house, vault restrooms, dump station, drinking water, and fish cleaning station. Four picnic shelters are available for day use. Fishing is permitted year-round, with walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, yellow perch, and channel catfish among the target species. The reservoir is open 24 hours and offers good access roads. A park entry permit is required for all vehicles.
