About

Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area encompasses 2,212 acres on the west edge of the Sandhills in Dawes County. The centerpiece is a 1,600-acre lake on the Niobrara River, offering 14 miles of shoreline and excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, and water recreation. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, yellow perch, and channel catfish year-round. The campground includes 54 total sites: 14 camping pads with 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups, and 40 non-pad basic campsites without electricity. Sites are arranged along the lakeshore, many featuring pull-through access. Each campsite includes a fire ring and picnic table. The area has been enhanced with a shower house and dump station. Beyond fishing and camping, Box Butte is recognized as one of the premier birding destinations in the Nebraska Panhandle, with over 200 species recorded since 1973. The flooded timber provides excellent habitat during spring high water. The reservoir experiences seasonal drawdown during summer irrigation season, which concentrates fish and changes fishing opportunities throughout the year.
