About
Situated at the edge of the 7,794-acre Soldier Creek Wilderness in Nebraska's Pine Ridge region, Soldier Creek Campground serves as a primary access point for wilderness exploration on foot or horseback. The campground offers 8 designated sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus additional open areas suitable for horse trailers and RVs. A standout feature is the extensive 15-paddock corral system with a round pen, making this a premier destination for equestrian camping in western Nebraska. The campground provides hand-pump well water, vault toilets, and trash collection, with first-come, first-served sites at $15 per night. Campers with horses must bring certified weed-free hay and haul stock water from nearby creeks or the hand pump. Two major trails depart from the campground: the Boots & Saddle Trail (7.1 miles) from the North Fork Trailhead and the Trooper Trail Loop (9.7 miles) from the Middle and South Fork Trailheads. These trails wind through rugged wilderness terrain featuring buttes, pinnacles, and ponderosa pine forests. Located near Fort Robinson State Park, the campground sits in historic territory once used as a wood reserve and pasture for the military reservation. The wilderness area prohibits motorized vehicles, preserving a quiet backcountry experience. Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer, turkey, and various bird species. The remote location and year-round access make it an excellent base camp for wilderness adventures in all seasons.
