About
Fort Robinson State Park sprawls across more than 22,000 acres of Pine Ridge landscape in northwest Nebraska, combining exceptional camping with compelling Old West history. The park operates three distinct campgrounds: Red Cloud Campground with 74 full hookup sites, Soldier Creek Campground with 77 electric plus and 22 basic sites, and Mare Barn Campground with equestrian-focused camping including 20 electric plus, 4 full hookup, and 8 basic sites. Half of the electrical campsites accept advance reservations, while the remainder are first-come, first-served. Camping amenities include modern restrooms with hot showers, drinking water, dump and fill station, picnic tables and shelters, and a coin-operated laundry facility near the Mare Barn. The historic fort, established in the 1870s and operational until after World War II, served as cavalry headquarters, K-9 training center, and POW camp. Many original buildings survive and now serve as lodging, museums, and activity centers. The park offers 60 miles of hiking trails and 20 miles of mountain biking trails, making it Nebraska's premier park for trail enthusiasts. Nine fishing ponds and cold-water streams hold rainbow and tiger trout, bass, bluegill, perch, and crappie. Horseback riders enjoy 20 miles of equestrian trails, with horse stall accommodations at Mare Barn. Summer activities include guided trail rides, jeep tours, stagecoach rides, and swimming at the Olympic-size Lindeken Pool. The Post Playhouse professional theater company performs Broadway-style musicals throughout the summer season.
