Wild River Backpack Campsites
Open — Open year-round for reservations. Campers must pack in water and approved firewood, as no water sources or firewood are available at the sites.
About
Wild River State Park's backpack campsites consist of seven primitive sites scattered along the park's extensive 35-mile trail system. These hike-in sites range from approximately 1.0 to 2.0 miles from parking areas and offer a more secluded camping experience compared to the park's drive-up campground. Located within the park's 6,800 acres along the scenic St. Croix River, the sites provide access to diverse ecosystems including river valley overlooks, prairies, and hardwood forests. These are true primitive camping sites with minimal amenities. Vault toilets are available, but campers must pack in all water, as there are no potable water sources near the sites. The closest water sources are at the boat dock (approximately 2.0 miles from some sites) or the camp office (approximately 1.0 mile from sites). Deadfall cannot be used for fires due to pest management regulations, so approved firewood must be packed in. Each site includes basic amenities like a fire ring and picnic table. The backpack sites are accessible year-round and can be reserved through the Minnesota State Parks reservation system. The park's trail system connects to excellent hiking opportunities and provides winter recreation including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Wildlife viewing opportunities include bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and various forest species.
