Wild Horse State Recreation Area Campground sits in the remote high desert of northern Nevada, 65 miles north of Elko on State Route 225. The campground features 34 sites at 6,200 feet elevation, each equipped with a table, shade structure, fire pit, and camp pad. Year-round restroom and shower facilities serve campers in all seasons, while centrally located water faucets and a dump station operate during summer months only. Pull-through sites accommodate large RVs, making this an accessible destination for bigger rigs. The park experiences some of Nevada's coldest temperatures, creating ideal conditions for ice fishing on Wild Horse Reservoir during winter months. The reservoir offers rainbow trout, German brown trout, smallmouth bass, wiper, yellow perch, and catfish. Spring brings extraordinary wildflower displays against snow-capped peaks exceeding 8,000 feet. Summer activities include swimming, boating, camping, and hiking on game trails across adjacent public lands. The campground serves as a popular staging area for hunting, snowmobiling, and OHV recreation in the surrounding Great Basin landscape. Wildlife viewing opportunities include pronghorn, mule deer, elk, waterfowl, and upland game birds. The treeless high desert environment features big sagebrush with patches of quaking aspen in the hills. Three rental cabins provide additional lodging options year-round. A 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period applies.
