Order 015 - Road Use Regulations - Forest Development
Code of Federal Regulations, the following acts are prohibited on all Forest Development Roads under the jurisdiction of the Black Hills National Forest:

Whitetail Campground is perched at 6,000 feet above Deerfield Reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest, providing an ideal setting for summer climate relief, recreation, and relaxation. The campground features widely spaced sites that cater to various camping preferences, with several offering stunning lake views and others tucked securely into ponderosa and lodgepole pine forest for those seeking more seclusion. Each campsite is equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings, and the campground can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. The location offers exceptional access to outdoor recreation opportunities. The 10-mile Deerfield Lake Loop Trail encircles the lake and is open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, offering fantastic views and opportunities for birding and picnicking. The nearby Deerfield Trail connects the lake with Rapid Creek and Pactola Reservoir, passing historic sites including log flumes, cabins, mines, tunnels, and railroad grades. Deerfield Reservoir itself is a no-wake lake ideal for fishing and boating, with populations of stocked rainbow and native brown trout. The campground provides vault toilets and hand-pump drinking water. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with possibilities to spot elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and numerous bird species including bald eagles, hawks, and osprey.
Directions
From Hill City, take Deerfield Road (County Route 308/Forest Road 17) west for 15.1 miles to Whitetail Campground sign (Forest Road 421). Turn right onto Forest Road 421 and travel 0.9 miles to the campground.
