About
Bear Mountain Fire Lookout stands tall on a 7,200-foot mountain peak, marking the third highest point in the Black Hills with commanding views extending to the Wyoming border. Located approximately 10 miles northwest of Custer, South Dakota, the tower has served as a critical fire detection station since 1910, with the current structure built in 1939 by the Custer Civilian Conservation Corps. The 30-foot steel frame tower with interior staircase and working cab represents the third iteration of fire lookouts at this site. The tower is actively staffed by fire lookout personnel from late spring through early fall and is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register as of 2017. Visitors can access the summit via well-maintained gravel Forest Service roads and explore interpretive exhibits illuminating the lookout's history and CCC contributions to the Southern Black Hills. The site serves as a day-use recreation area with picnic facilities and vault toilets. This is an administrative site, not a campground, and overnight camping is not permitted at or near the tower.
