About

Black Fox Campground is a remote, primitive campground tucked within a spruce forest on the South Fork of Rapid Creek in the Black Hills National Forest. With just nine sites, it offers a quieter alternative to larger developed campgrounds in the area. The adjacent Black Fox Botanical Area provides opportunities for nature study and short hikes. The campground operates on a first-come first-served basis with no advance reservations available. Peak season camping costs $19 per night, while off-season camping is free. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water on site, so campers must bring adequate drinking water. During winter, the access road is closed to wheeled vehicles from December 15 through March 31 to accommodate snowmobile trail use. A warming hut is available along the snowmobile trail system. The campground tends to be popular on weekends during the summer season.

Directions

From Rapid City, go west on Highway 44 approximately 18 miles, turn right onto Highway 385 and drive approximately 5 miles, then turn left onto Rochford Road. Follow Rochford Road for approximately 10 miles; the campground will be on the left. Alternatively, from Rochford, travel west on FSR 231 for approximately 8 miles.
