About

Located in the heart of Black Hills National Forest, Oreville Campground provides a peaceful retreat on a scenic hillside 4 miles south of Hill City. The 16 campsites are spread among aspen groves, ponderosa pines, and grassy areas, with many sites offering generous spacing and a sense of privacy. The campground accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs up to 51 feet on gravel back-in driveways. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets centrally located. The campground operates seasonally through late September, transitioning to first-come-first-served off-season access through October 31, weather permitting. During the regular season, reservations are available through Recreation.gov alongside some walk-in sites. The location along Highway 16/385 provides excellent access to Black Hills attractions including Crazy Horse Monument, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave National Park, and Custer State Park. Outdoor enthusiasts can access the 100-mile George S. Mickelson Trail nearby or tackle the hike to Black Elk Peak, the highest point east of the Rockies.

Directions

From Hill City, SD, at the intersection of East Main St. (US Route 16) and Deerfield Rd. (County Route 308), take US Route 16 south 5.2 miles to the campground sign. Turn left at the sign into the campground.
