Custer Trail Campground
Closed — Closed for the season. The campground closes December 15 annually and typically reopens mid-May, conditions permitting. During the off-season, access roads are not plowed or maintained.

Order 015 - Road Use Regulations - Forest Development
Code of Federal Regulations, the following acts are prohibited on all Forest Development Roads under the jurisdiction of the Black Hills National Forest:

About
Custer Trail Campground is located on the north shore of Deerfield Reservoir, approximately 23 miles west of Hill City along the scenic Deerfield Road. This small, lightly-used campground offers 16 sites in a forested setting adjacent to one of the Black Hills' popular fishing and boating destinations. The campground provides convenient access to both water recreation and hiking opportunities, with a boat launch immediately adjacent and the trailhead for the 10-mile Deerfield Trail loop that circles the reservoir. The campground is managed by a concessionaire and operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-December. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations available. During peak season, sites cost $22 per night, with Interagency Senior and Access pass holders receiving a 50% discount. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. The campground provides vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water during the peak season only. Access to the campground requires traveling Forest Service Road 417 to the end of the road on the northwest side of the lake. The remote location and light usage levels make this an appealing option for campers seeking a quieter experience away from more developed campgrounds. The area offers excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, and wildlife viewing in the heart of Black Hills National Forest.

From Hill City, go west on Highway 17 (Deerfield Road) approximately 23 miles to the northwest side of Deerfield Lake. Turn right (south) on Forest Service Road 417 and travel to the end of the road.
