About

Custer Trail Campground occupies a quiet spot on the north shore of Deerfield Reservoir at approximately 6,000 feet elevation in the Black Hills National Forest. The campground provides 13 sites split between tent-only (8 sites) and RV-compatible nonelectric sites (5 sites), each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Vault toilets serve the campground, and potable water is available from a hand pump during peak season only. The adjacent boat launch makes this a convenient base for fishing and boating on Deerfield Lake, known for its rainbow and brown trout. The Deerfield Trail (Trail #40L) begins at the campground, offering hiking and mountain biking along the lakeshore. Maximum spur length is 50 feet. All sites operate first-come, first-served with no reservations. Peak season runs through early September at $19 per night, after which the campground transitions to free off-season camping with reduced services (no water, pack-it-out trash). Interagency Senior/Access pass holders receive 50% off single campsite fees during peak season.

Directions

From Hill City, drive west on Highway 17 (Deerfield Road) approximately 23 miles to the northwest side of Deerfield Lake. Turn right (south) onto Forest Road 417 and continue to the end of the road.
