About
Castle Peak Campground is a secluded retreat in the Black Hills National Forest, situated along Castle Creek in a picturesque canyon shaded by towering spruce trees. The campground offers nine first-come, first-served sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water; campers must treat or filter water from the nearby creek. The remote location means light usage and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for those seeking solitude. Historic mining sites are accessible nearby for exploration. The final 8 miles on Forest Road 181 are rough and narrow, so high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Maximum vehicle length is 45 feet, though the winding access road may challenge larger rigs. Peak season fees are $19 per night, while off-season camping (starting September 8) is free. The campground operates year-round on a pack-it-out basis for garbage. Pets are allowed but must be leashed at all times in developed areas.
Directions
From Hill City, go west on Highway 17 (Deerfield Road) 5 miles to Tigerville. Continue straight on Mystic Road 8 miles to Castleton. Turn left on Castle Peak Road (FSR 181) and travel 8 miles to the campground. Note: The last 8 miles on FSR 181 is rough and narrow.
