About

Named for the clay once mined in the area, White Clay Creek State Park spans over 3,600 acres of protected woodland and stream valleys along Delaware's northern edge. The White Clay Creek, designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 2000, is the most heavily stocked water in Delaware and offers excellent fishing opportunities including catch-and-release largemouth bass. Smith Mill Pond features accessible fishing docks for anglers of all abilities. The park's 37+ miles of trails make it one of the most popular destinations for outdoor recreation in the region. Mountain bikers come from across the area to experience the diverse easy-to-moderate trails with elevation changes and rock outcrops. Hikers enjoy both paved accessible trails and challenging backcountry routes that pass historic monuments and scenic vistas. The forest provides critical habitat for migrating and nesting birds, including the rare cerulean warbler. The Carpenter Recreation Area features an 18-hole disc golf course winding through wooded areas, along with a pavilion, bandshell, stage, and playground. The 200-year-old Chambers House Nature Center offers educational programs about the park's natural and cultural history. With its convenient location in New Castle County and extensive recreational opportunities, White Clay Creek serves as a vital open space for northern Delaware residents and visitors.
