About

Natural resources like mature woodlands and the Brandywine River meet rich industrial and cultural history at Alapocas Run State Park. Located in the heart of Wilmington, this 359-acre urban park preserves mature forests, blue granite cliffs, and traces of the area's industrial past. The park's land was donated to the city of Wilmington in the early 1900s by industrialist William Bancroft and became a state park in 2002. Unique features include Delaware's only publicly accessible rock climbing wall on dramatic blue granite cliffs, the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail (a National Recreation Trail), and the historic Blue Ball Barn built in 1914 that now houses the Delaware Folk Art Collection in a LEED-certified facility. The park also features the Can-Do Playground, Delaware's first boundless playground designed to be accessible to children of all abilities, and the Alapocas Woods trail offering a 0.7-mile hike through mature forest. Alapocas Run State Park is a day-use facility offering hiking, biking, rock climbing, educational programs, athletic fields, and picnic areas. The park does not offer overnight camping accommodations. Visitors can explore paved and natural trails, attend ranger programs, and experience both natural beauty and cultural heritage in an urban setting.
