Fort Delaware State Park
The campground operates on a limited schedule, with camping only available on select weekend nights during the fort's operating season (late April through late September). The fort and ferry operate Wednesday through Sunday and holidays. Ferry service may be canceled due to weather conditions.
About
Fort Delaware State Park preserves a massive granite and brick fortification on Pea Patch Island, constructed between 1848 and 1859 to defend the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia. During the Civil War, the fort served as a Union prison camp holding up to 12,500 Confederate prisoners at its peak. Today visitors can explore the restored fortress, experience living history programs, and take guided tours. The island supports one of the largest Atlantic Coast nesting sites for herons, egrets, and ibises north of Florida, with an estimated 5,000 to 12,000 breeding pairs annually. Nature trails wind through the island allowing visitors to observe wildlife alongside the historic structures. Camping at Fort Delaware is a unique island experience. Tent camping takes place on the historic parade ground inside the fort itself. Access requires taking the ferry from Delaware City, with the ticket office and dock located at 45 Clinton Street. The ferry operates seasonally from late April through late September, Wednesday through Sunday and holidays, with departure intervals from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Ferry service is suspended during thunderstorms, high winds, or unfavorable conditions.
