About

Whetstone Horse Camp sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains within the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests, near the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River. The campground is specifically designed for equestrian use, with each of the 18 sites equipped with parking spurs for horse trailers. Hitching racks and highlines are located throughout the facility, and horses cannot be tied to trees. The camp serves as the primary base for riders exploring the Rocky Gap Trail on the South Carolina side and the Willis Knob Horse Trail on the Georgia side, combining for over 30 miles of horseback riding opportunities. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. Vault toilets and potable drinking water are available. Sites 6 and 7 are double campsites that accommodate two campers, two trailers, and two vehicles. The town of Walhalla is 13 miles away and hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration. Nearby attractions include Stumphouse Tunnel, a 19th-century uncompleted railroad tunnel, and Isaqueena Falls, both about 20 minutes from camp.

Directions

From Walhalla, go north 6 miles on State Highway 28. Turn left onto Whetstone Road and continue for about 5 miles. Go straight at the four-way stop for another 1.5 miles until the pavement ends and gravel begins. A sign for Whetstone Horse Camp appears about 0.75 miles down the gravel road. The camp is on the left.
