About
West Fork Cabin is a rustic Forest Service guard station situated 39 miles northwest of Choteau, Montana, on the Rocky Mountain Front Range. The cabin sits in the valley of the North Fork Teton River near Mount Werner and Mount Wright, approximately 3.5 miles beyond Teton Pass Ski Resort. Open year-round for rental, this single-room cabin accommodates up to six guests with two sets of bunk beds and two folding cots. The cabin is heated by propane with a limited supply of firewood provided for the wood cookstove. A propane cookstove is also available. There is no electricity or refrigerator. Potable water is available year-round from a hand pump outside. A vault toilet is located outdoors. While a ramp provides access to the cabin, the interior is not designed to meet full accessibility standards. The area is covered by a food storage order requiring all food to be stored in bear-resistant containers or inside the cabin when unattended from March 1 through December 15. Access is via paved county road then gravel Forest Service Road 144. During winter when the ski area operates, the road is plowed to the ski area, but guests must ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile the final 3.5 miles to the cabin. Recreation opportunities include hiking, fishing, horseback riding, downhill skiing at the nearby resort, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest features 1,600 miles of streams and is home to grizzly bears, black bears, white-tailed deer, bald eagles, lynx, bighorn sheep, and grey wolves. A corral can accommodate up to nine head of stock with certified weed-free feed. Check-in and checkout is 2:00 p.m., and keys are issued by the ranger district office.
Directions
From Highway 89 about 5 miles north of Choteau, go west on Teton Canyon Road, which becomes Forest Development Road 144 at the forest boundary. Continue past Teton Pass Ski Resort approximately 3.5 miles to the road end. The cabin is located behind the locked gate to your left just after crossing the bridge. In winter, the road is not plowed beyond the ski area; park at the ski area parking lot and ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile to the cabin.
