About

Hannan Dispersed is a primitive camping area situated in the Rocky Mountain Range section of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest in Teton County, Montana. The area lies near Hannan Gulch Trail (#240), a 6.5-mile route that follows an old seismic road through open terrain with views of Castle Reef rising along the eastern side. As dispersed camping on National Forest land, there are no developed facilities. Campers must bring their own water, pack out all trash, and practice Leave No Trace principles. Human waste must be buried in catholes 6-8 inches deep and at least 100 feet from water sources. Campfires are permitted when no fire restrictions are in effect, using existing fire rings when possible and collecting only dead, downed wood. The area is bear country with mandatory food storage requirements. All food and wildlife attractants must be stored in approved containers. The Rocky Mountain Ranger District in Choteau manages this area and can provide current conditions and any travel restrictions affecting access roads.

Directions

From Choteau, travel west on US-89 toward the Rocky Mountain Front. Turn onto Road 8983 to access the Hannan Gulch area. A Lewis and Clark Forest Visitor's map is recommended to determine current travel restrictions and road access.
