Potable water at the outside hydrant has been restored. Water has been tested as safe yet has a mild sulphur taste. Parties sensitive to smell or taste should bring consumable water.

About

The Ear Mountain Cabin was renovated in 2022 from a Lewis and Clark National Forest administrative cabin into a public rental facility. Located approximately 26 miles west of Choteau, Montana, the cabin sits under the northeast slope of Ear Mountain along the South Fork Teton River in the Rocky Mountain Front Range. Access is straightforward with the first 17 miles paved on Teton Canyon Road and the final stretch on well-maintained gravel. The cabin is fully equipped with a propane cooking range and oven, ample counter space, complete kitchen equipment including dishes and cookware, propane heaters in each room, a wood stove, and electric lighting and outlets throughout. Two private bedrooms with built-in bunk beds accommodate up to nine people. An outside water hydrant provides potable water, though it has a mild sulfur taste. The facility operates as pack-in, pack-out with no trash service. The location provides excellent access to hiking, horseback riding, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing opportunities. Nearby trailheads include Headquarters Pass and Our Lake, with routes leading into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. The adjacent BLM Ear Mountain Outstanding Natural Area is closed December 15 through June 30 annually. Bears are active in the area, and food storage orders are in effect March 1 through December 15. No pets, stock, or camping units are permitted at the cabin site, and hunting is prohibited within the cabin gates.

Directions

From Highway 89 about 5 miles north of Choteau, go west on Teton Canyon Road. Just before mile marker 17, turn left on Bellview Cutacross Road, cross the bridge then turn right on South Fork Teton Road (just past a group of mailboxes) and continue approximately 4 miles. The cabin is located on your left behind the gate.
