About
Wendell State Forest is a 7,566-acre state forest located in the rolling hills south of the Millers River in Franklin County, Massachusetts. Originally purchased in the 1920s after heavy burning in the early 1900s, the forest was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, which built much of the existing road system. Today it offers diverse recreational opportunities including seasonal camping, hiking, swimming at Ruggles Pond, and hunting in season. The forest features a network of trails including segments of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, with backcountry camping available at lean-tos along this route. The terrain consists of forested hills, streams, ponds, and scenic vistas that provide a remote wilderness experience despite being relatively accessible from central Massachusetts communities. Two pavilions are available for reservation for group events. The forest is part of a watershed protection area and offers visitors a chance to experience New England's recovering forests. Internal forest roads close to vehicular traffic following the first significant snowstorm each winter and remain closed through mud season, though the forest itself is open year-round for day use from sunrise to sunset.
