The campground is currently closed for the season and reopens May 26, 2026. Reservations can be made up to 90 days prior to arrival through the Massachusetts DCR camping system.

About
Wendell State Forest encompasses over 7,500 acres of rolling forested hills, streams, and ponds in Franklin County, Massachusetts. The camping experience here centers on an Adirondack-style lean-to shelter positioned just north of scenic Ruggles Pond along the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (part of the New England National Scenic Trail). The three-sided shelter accommodates 6-8 people and provides a genuine backcountry experience. A fire pit is available at the site, and water sources are accessible within a short distance. The only restroom facility is a portable toilet located at the forest headquarters, which operates from late spring through late fall. Ruggles Pond offers swimming and fishing during day-use hours. The forest features extensive trail networks for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This is a primitive camping destination suited for hikers and backpackers seeking solitude in the Massachusetts woods rather than a developed drive-in campground.
Directions
From Route 2, take Exit 15 toward Millers Falls/Wendell. Follow Wendell Road north for approximately 4 miles to the forest entrance at 392 Montague Road, Wendell.
