About

Waxahachie Creek Park is located on the upper reaches of Bardwell Lake, near the mouth of Waxahachie Creek, less than an hour south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in north-central Texas. The word "Waxahachie" is believed to be the Tonkawa Native American word for "Buffalo Creek." This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility offers 65 developed campsites with water and electric hookups, making it a popular destination for RV campers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quick escape from city life. The campground features both 30-amp and 50-amp electric service options, with sites accommodating standard RVs, tent campers, and equestrian visitors. Four sites are specifically designated for equestrian use, requiring guests to present proof of a current Coggins test. The park includes seven non-electric picnic sites and one reservable group pavilion that can accommodate up to 200 people, along with a day-use area for visitors not camping overnight. Bardwell Lake is considered one of the best-kept fishing secrets in Texas, with bass fishermen rarely leaving empty-handed. Crappie fishing is moderate, and catfish are usually excellent. The lake features a marina with fishing piers, two of which are enclosed. The Bardwell Lake equestrian and multi-use trail begins at this facility, providing over 13 miles of trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. The trail passes through bottomland hardwood forest and offers access to observation shelters overlooking the Buffalo Creek Wetlands. Visitors should note the trail is located within a designated hunting area from September through March. Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer, armadillo, rabbits, squirrels, and numerous bird species. Spring visitors are treated to enormous blooms of bluebonnets and other wildflowers surrounding the lakeshore.
