About

Situated in the rugged New Jersey Highlands near Vernon Township, Wawayanda State Park Campground offers group camping experiences in a forested wilderness setting. The park spans more than 34,000 acres of mixed hardwood forest, hemlock ravines, and swamps, with Wawayanda Lake serving as a centerpiece for recreation. Four group campsites provide tent camping for parties ranging from 7 to 35 people, making this an ideal destination for scout troops, family reunions, or outdoor clubs. The camping facilities are intentionally rustic. Each site includes picnic tables and fire rings, with a composting restroom serving the campground area. Potable water is not piped to the sites and must be carried from the main park office. There are no showers, hookups, or dump stations. Firewood can be purchased at the park office. This primitive setup appeals to groups seeking a back-to-basics outdoor experience rather than developed amenities. Beyond camping, the park offers over 60 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. Wawayanda Lake provides a swimming beach, boat launch, and fishing opportunities. The surrounding terrain features geological wonders including rhyolite outcrops and evidence of past iron mining operations.
