About
Located in Clay County about 35 miles northeast of Kansas City, Watkins Mill State Park campground provides a convenient escape combining natural beauty with living history. The 96-site campground sits in a wooded setting near a 100-acre lake stocked with bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Sites feature graveled parking pads ranging from 38 to 80 feet, with electric sites offering the longer pads suitable for larger RVs. The campground is divided between year-round sites (1-34 and 98-99) and seasonal sites (35-97) open April 15 through October 31. Amenities include 74 electric sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp service, two shower houses, a coin-operated laundry, and a dump station. Five sites are ADA accessible. During the off-season, showers, laundry, and the dump station are closed, though frost-free hydrants provide water. Beyond camping, the park features swimming beach access, hiking trails including the Lake Trail, and the Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site, a preserved 1860s textile factory that offers guided tours. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring these attractions while remaining close to Kansas City metro amenities.
