About
Warm River Cabin sits at Warm River Springs, less than 20 miles from Ashton, Idaho, within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The cabin was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and originally served as the manager's residence for an Idaho fish and game hatchery that operated from the 1930s to 1950s. The single-story structure features two bedrooms with six sets of bunkbeds and mattresses accommodating up to 12 people, a living area with wood stove, and a kitchen equipped with a stove, refrigerator, and basic cookware. The cabin is open year-round with varying access methods. During warmer months it is accessible by car via Forest Road 154. From early December through mid-May, guests must access the cabin via snowmobile or cross-country skis on a groomed 6-mile trail from Bear Gulch Trailhead. Keys are picked up at Ashton Ranger Station during business hours. The Warm River provides excellent trout fishing opportunities including brook, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Nearby trails accommodate hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The cabin is a short distance from the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, featuring the 114-foot Upper Mesa Falls and 65-foot Lower Mesa Falls. This is bear country and food must be stored properly. The cabin is pack-it-in/pack-it-out with no potable water available on site.
