Buffalo Campground is situated in the Island Park area of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest along the Buffalo River at an elevation of 6,200 feet. The campground features 127 sites spread across six family loops plus one group loop, with paved roads throughout. Sites include both single and double family configurations, with one loop offering electric hookups. Vault toilets, potable water, and trash collection are provided. Island Park is renowned for world-class fly fishing, particularly on the Henry's Fork, which holds rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout as well as Kokanee salmon. The nearby Island Park Reservoir and Henry's Lake offer additional fishing and boating opportunities. The Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail provides a scenic three-hour float through wildlife habitat where moose, bald eagles, and Sandhill cranes are frequently spotted. Mesa Falls Scenic Byway is 7 miles south, leading to Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. Harriman State Park sits 8 miles south with over 20 miles of trails. Yellowstone National Park's west entrance is just 26 miles north in West Yellowstone, Montana, making this campground an excellent base for exploring the region.

Directions

From West Yellowstone, Montana, take US Highway 20 south for 26 miles. From Ashton, Idaho, take US Highway 20 north for 25 miles. The campground entrance is 0.25 miles north of Ponds Lodge on the east side of the highway.
