About
Cave Falls Campground is nestled along the banks of the Fall River within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest's Ashton/Island Park Ranger District, about 24 miles east of Ashton, Idaho, near the Wyoming border. At 6,200 feet elevation, the campground is surrounded by lodgepole pine and aspen forest along the swift, deep waters of Fall River. This location places campers in prime grizzly bear country where special food storage precautions are mandatory.
The campground offers 23 single-family sites, each equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills. Bear-proof storage boxes are provided at each site, and vault toilets, drinking water, and a dumpster are available throughout the campground. Gravel roads and parking spurs accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. The Fall River provides excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow and cutthroat trout.
Just 2 miles east, Cave Falls plunges 20 feet over a basalt ledge in Yellowstone National Park. The Bechler Ranger Station entrance, 2 miles northwest, provides the only access to Yellowstone's remote southwest corner, known as the Cascade Corner, featuring waterfalls and backcountry trails. Wildlife including bears, moose, and elk are common in the area. The last 12 miles of Cave Falls Road is gravel.
