The following message is transmitted on behalf of the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Air Quality Division, and the Wyoming Department of Health. * WHAT...Air Quality Alert for Wildfire Smoke. * WHERE...All of Western and Central Wyoming * WHEN...Now through Noon Monday. * IMPACTS...Smoke from western United States wildfires continues to be observed across much of western and central Wyoming. The smoke is limiting visibilities at times. HEALTH INFORMATION...The Wyoming Department of Health recommends that the elderly, young children, and individuals with respiratory problems avoid excessive physical exertion and minimize outdoor activities during this time. Wildfire smoke is made up of a variety of pollutants, including particulate matter and ozone, which can cause respiratory health effects. Although these people are most susceptible to health impacts, the Department of Health also advises that everyone should avoid prolonged exposure to poor air quality conditions. CURRENT CONDITIONS...The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Air Quality Division offers near real-time air quality data for Wyoming's monitoring stations and health effects information to help the public interpret current conditions. Squirrel Meadows Cabin is a historic Forest Service guard station built in 1934, though the site has been used for administrative purposes since 1907. The 2-room cabin is constructed of lodgepole pine with a wood shingled roof and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Only one other cabin in Wyoming shares the same building plan. The cabin sleeps up to 8 guests and provides bunkbeds with mattresses, a wood stove for cooking and heating, table and chairs, and firewood. Outside amenities include a hand pump for drinking water, vault toilet, picnic table, and horse corrals. Guests must bring their own bedding, matches, battery or propane lighting, first aid kit, and trash bags as this is a pack-it-out facility. Situated at 6,500 feet on the Yellowstone Plateau in southwest Wyoming, the cabin offers access to horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, OHV riding, snowmobiling, hiking, and mountain biking. The area is prime wildlife habitat with black bear, grizzly bear, wolf, elk, moose, and mule deer. All food must be stored according to bear country regulations.

Directions

From Ashton, ID, take Highway 47 through town to Highway 32 and turn right (south). Travel 1 mile to Ashton-Flagg Ranch Road (#261 / 1200 North). Turn left (east) and travel 22 miles to Road #032. Turn right (south) and travel half a mile to the cabin. When open, vehicle access is available mid-May through mid-November with the final 10 miles on gravel. Winter access (December through mid-May) requires snowmobile or cross-country skis for a 10-mile trek from the trailhead.
