Walnut Grove Campground is one of three primitive campgrounds at James River State Park, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Buckingham County. The campground features five primitive tent-only sites in a shaded, wooded setting, offering a quiet escape just a short walk from the James River. The sites accommodate tents and rooftop tents, though there are no tent pads and limited anchoring ability for hammocks. Open year-round, Walnut Grove provides a true backcountry experience without electricity or water at the campsites. Potable water is available at four of the five picnic shelters throughout the park. The campground has primitive vault toilets. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. The park is a trash-in, trash-out facility, so visitors must pack out all waste. James River State Park offers exceptional outdoor recreation across 1,561 acres, including 3 miles of shoreline along the historic James River. The park features 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, excellent smallmouth bass fishing, boat launches, and a universally accessible fishing pier. As a designated International Dark Sky Park, stargazing opportunities are outstanding. The visitor center offers exhibits, a gift shop, and snacks, while ranger-led programs run on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Directions

From U.S. 60 West, turn right onto Route 605 (Riverside Dr.) at the James River Bridge. Travel seven miles, then turn left onto Route 606. Follow signs to James River State Park at 104 Green Hill Drive, Gladstone, VA 24553.
