Red Oak Campground is situated within James River State Park, a 1,561-acre park nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Buckingham County. The campground features 30 well-appointed sites with electric and water hookups, capable of accommodating various camping equipment including tents, pop-ups, and RVs up to 40 feet in length. Each site includes a large tent pad measuring approximately 15 by 24 feet, wide driveways for RV bump-outs, a fire-ring grill, picnic table, and lantern hanger. All sites have electric pedestals with 20, 30, and 50 AMP outlets. The campground is located approximately one mile from the primitive campgrounds and is not directly on the river, though overnight guests enjoy free boat launching privileges at the park's James River access points. The full-service bathhouse features four unisex showers, including one universally accessible shower, hot water, and a wash sink for dishes. A coin laundry facility with two washers and dryers is available for camper convenience. The campground provides a dump station free for overnight guests. James River State Park is an International Dark Sky Park, making it ideal for stargazing. The park features 22 miles of multi-use trails, three miles of James River shoreline, and opportunities for smallmouth bass fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. The park operates as a trash-in, trash-out facility to protect wildlife. A visitor center with gift shop, natural playground, and five picnic shelters are available throughout the park.

Directions

From U.S. 60 West, turn right onto Route 605 (Riverside Drive) at the James River Bridge. Travel seven miles, then turn left onto Route 606. The park entrance will be on your left.
